Kitty marries Mark because he's an all-around nice guy (like the one I married) who will be devoted to her; I think she loves him but just doesn't have the passion for him that she had for Wyn. I get that. I liked Wyn, too, but he's one of those romantic idealists who just doesn't "get it." Her relationship with her father, Delphine, and her son (who died before she could meet him) are also significant, as you aptly pointed out. Do women want the future more than they want men? I think they want both: Kitty wanted a future with a man, and Mark happened to be the one who patiently waited for her. She wanted security, if not financial security then security in a husband's love, for when the man cares more than the woman, the relationship has a lot better chance of lasting. It may not have been a husband that Kitty wanted as much as children, but back then, she needed the former to get the latter.
